Cancer survivorship can create ongoing financial stress. These resources can help with medical bills, prescriptions, insurance denials, disability, and other financial challenges.

Financial stress is a real late effect of cancer.

For many survivors, the financial impact of cancer does not end when treatment ends. Medical bills, prescription costs, follow-up care, insurance denials, time away from work, and disability paperwork can all add up quickly.

Patient Advocate Foundation

Patient Advocate Foundation offers free one-on-one case management to help patients and families solve real-life problems related to a serious health condition, including paying for treatment, employment concerns, and insurance barriers. It also offers disease-specific co-pay and financial aid programs.

Triage Cancer, Legal & Financial Navigation Program

Triage Cancer provides free one-on-one legal and financial navigation for people 2 of 10 affected by cancer. Their program helps with disability insurance, employment issues, health insurance, finances, and more. Their disability quick guide also covers SSDI, SSI, Compassionate Allowances, state disability insurance, and what to do if a claim is denied.

CancerCare Financial Assistance

CancerCare offers limited financial assistance for cancer-related costs, such as transportation, home care, and child care, as well as co-pay assistance and oncology social work support. CancerCare also publishes a current national financial resource guide for people with cancer.

Dollar For

Dollar For helps patients apply for hospital financial assistance, sometimes called charity care. CMS also explains that nonprofit hospitals must provide financial assistance to eligible patients who cannot afford to pay. This is one of the best places to start if hospital bills feel impossible.

Direct Financial Help

Patient Advocate Foundation Financial Aid Funds

Patient Advocate Foundation offers small grants for eligible patients through diseasespecific and hardship-based funds. Availability varies, and funds can open and close, so it is worth checking regularly.

PAN Foundation

The PAN Foundation provides financial help through disease funds for eligible patients with high out-of-pocket costs. It is especially useful for people who have insurance but still cannot afford treatment-related costs.

HealthWell Foundation

HealthWell helps underinsured patients with copays, deductibles, premiums, and selected out-of-pocket costs for essential treatments and medications.

The Assistance Fund

The Assistance Fund helps eligible patients and families with copays, coinsurance, deductibles, and certain other health-related expenses through disease programs.

Good Days

Good Days is a national nonprofit that provides assistance, advocacy, and education for people with chronic illness. Funding varies by disease program, so it is best used as an additional option to check.

CancerCare Financial Assistance

CancerCare offers limited financial assistance for treatment-related expenses and may also help connect people to additional resources through oncology social workers.

Medical Bills and Debt Relief

CMS Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Many hospitals offer financial assistance or charity care for patients who cannot afford their bills. CMS explains that nonprofit hospitals must provide financial assistance to eligible patients, and patients should ask the billing department directly for the hospital’s financial assistance policy.

Government Help With Medical Bills

USA.gov can help people explore Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, Marketplace coverage, and other public coverage options that may reduce medical costs.

Prescription Drug and Co-Pay Help

CancerCare Co-Payment Assistance Foundation

CancerCare offers co-pay assistance for prescribed cancer treatments through its Co- Payment Assistance Foundation.

PAF Co-Pay Relief

PAF’s Co-Pay Relief Program provides direct financial assistance to insured patients who qualify and need help paying out-of-pocket treatment or prescription costs.

Partnership for Prescription Assistance

This is a useful search tool for finding prescription assistance options for people who are uninsured or underinsured.

NeedyMeds

NeedyMeds is a free information resource for medication savings programs, patient assistance programs, clinics, and other health care cost support.

RxAssist

RxAssist is another helpful search tool for manufacturer patient assistance programs and medication help.

Medicare Prescription Payment Plan

If you have Medicare Part D, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan lets you spread out out-of-pocket prescription costs into capped monthly payments rather than paying all at once at the pharmacy. Medicare also states that out-of-pocket drug costs for covered drugs are capped at $2,100 in 2026.

Insurance Denials and Appeals

HealthCare.gov Appeals

If a Marketplace or private insurer refuses to pay a claim or ends coverage, HealthCare.gov explains that patients have the right to appeal and have the decision reviewed by a third party.

Medicare Appeals

Medicare provides official guidance on how to file an appeal if Medicare or a Medicare plan does not pay for care, items, or services.

State Department of Insurance Complaints

If your insurance company has treated you unfairly, mishandled a claim, or given an unsatisfactory result, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that you can file a complaint with your state department of insurance.

SHIP / HICAP

State Health Insurance Assistance Programs offer free, one-on-one Medicare counseling for beneficiaries, caregivers, and people under 65 with disabilities who are on Medicare. In California, this is HICAP.

Disability, Work, and Income Support

Social Security Disability

If cancer or late effects make it impossible to work, Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income may be options. Some cancers and serious conditions may qualify for Compassionate Allowances, which can speed up disability determinations.

Triage Cancer’s disability guide is one of the clearest practical resources for understanding SSDI, SSI, state disability insurance, private disability insurance, and appeals.

Cancer and Careers: Filing for Disability

Cancer and Careers offers survivor-friendly information about filing for disability and understanding workplace rights under laws such as the ADA and FMLA.

Cancer and Careers: Workplace Rights

For survivors trying to stay employed or return to work, Cancer and Careers is especially helpful for understanding job protections, reasonable accommodations, and leave options.

Travel Expenses Resources

Corporate Angel Network

Corporate Angel Network (CAN) is an organization that helps cancer patients access the best treatment centers in the United States by arranging free travel on business or commercial aircraft, including both turbofan- and turboprop-powered.

Selected International Resources

Canada

The Canadian Cancer Society offers financial-help information and points patients to government programs such as Employment Insurance sickness benefits. It also notes that hospital social workers and drug access navigators may help people find local, provincial, and federal support.

United Kingdom

Macmillan Cancer Support provides strong guidance on benefits, financial support, grants, and loans for people affected by cancer in the UK. Macmillan’s old national grant program is no longer broadly available, so it is better to link to their current benefits and grants guidance rather than older Macmillan grant pages.

Australia

Cancer Council Australia offers financial assistance information, including help with transport, accommodation, and other cancer-related costs.

Singapore

Singapore Cancer Society offers financial assistance schemes for eligible cancer patients, including the Cancer Care Fund.
